Overview

Understanding Great-Circle Distance

The geometry behind measuring separation across Earth's spherical surface.

What is Great-Circle Distance?

The shortest path between any two points on a sphere is known as a great-circle path (or orthodromic distance). Unlike flat Euclidean planes where the shortest distance is a straight line drawn on paper, the shortest path on a sphere is an arc that lies along the intersection of the sphere and a plane passing through the Earth's center.

When projected onto standard flat maps (like Web Mercator), this arc appears curved, often arching toward the poles. This is why intercontinental commercial flights follow curved trajectories.

The Haversine Mathematical Formula

GeoTool uses the Haversine trigonometric formula to calculate distance directly from latitude and longitude coordinates:

a = sin²(Δφ/2) + cos φ₁ ⋅ cos φ₂ ⋅ sin²(Δλ/2)
c = 2 ⋅ atan2( √a, √(1−a) )
d = R ⋅ c

Where φ represents latitude in radians, λ represents longitude in radians, and R is Earth's volumetric mean radius (6,371 km).

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions regarding distance measurements and geographic calculations.

What is a distance calculator?

A distance calculator is a spatial utility that computes the physical geographic separation between two points on Earth using spherical trigonometry and coordinate data (latitude and longitude).

How is distance between two locations calculated?

GeoTool calculates great-circle distance using a spherical Earth model. Geographic coordinates are represented using the WGS84 coordinate reference system.

Is this driving distance?

No. This calculator measures straight-line great-circle distance between two geographic coordinates. Driving distances follow road networks and traffic conditions and are generally longer than straight-line distances, although the difference varies significantly depending on the location and road network.

How accurate is straight-line distance?

GeoTool calculates straight-line distance from geographic coordinates using a spherical Earth model. It provides an estimate of the shortest surface distance between two points and should not be interpreted as road, navigation, or surveying-grade distance.

Can I calculate distance between raw coordinates?

Yes. You can paste decimal degree coordinates (e.g., 28.6139, 77.2090) directly into the location search inputs or use the interactive map pin placement to calculate distances between arbitrary coordinates.

Can I convert kilometers to miles, feet, and nautical miles?

Yes. Every calculation automatically provides simultaneous conversions into Kilometers (km), Statute Miles (mi), Nautical Miles (NM), Meters (m), and Feet (ft) without needing manual calculations.
